A mother filed a lawsuit against a daycare center where her Deaf child are expected to learn lipreading and speech skills to be normal like anyone else but they became upset when her son learned ASL on the playgrounds. The court dismissed the case citing that the state already recognized ASL a language. Psychologists agreed that the Deaf often removes their cochlear-implants once they become of legal age, "Yes, it's true that parents have their rights to choose the mode of communication but it's the opinion of the court to decide what's best in the interests the Deaf child, and recommended that he be transferred to the state school and parents participate in an ASL outreach program that's available to them. Social skills, not speech, is a critical element to living within our community, not to be detached from our oppressive society..The parents decided not to appeal the case, to accept their Deaf child, realizing that God may have a purpose.
