The state ASL interpreter, Patty Sakal, was often seen besides Hawaiian Governor David Ige during daily coronavirus briefings interpreting for the Deaf community.
Deaf Anthology, as the rest of us, was shocked to learn that Patty Sakal died yesterday from the same coronavirus herself. I didn't expect it, but our interpreters, like those in the medical field treating patients, are essential workers during this pandemic.
Deaf Anthology thinks that ASL interpreters should be among the first to receive the vaccines as some of them are on call to interpret for any Deaf patients hospitalized for the unrelenting virus wrecking havoc in our life.
