Kisii School of the Deaf in Bomokora village, Peter Ogango, himself deaf, the
school director said the institution is unable to pay rent for the five rooms,
buy food and pay electricity bills after support from friends diminished during
the Covid-19 pandemic. Kisii School of the Deaf is the only Deaf school in Kenya
runs by the Deaf themselves is facing closure, despite increases of Deaf
children enrolled in the program. Most of the Deaf children are either orphans
or live in poverty. The Deaf school can't afford the 9,000 schillings ($82 US)
monthly rent to operate the school. There is also a high turnover rate of
teachers due to lack of educational materials and tools. The school dosn't have
enough desks to meet the Ministry of Health requirement on social distancing to
contain spread of coronavirus. There isn't even enough to pay their five
teachers and feed the 45 Deaf children and their staff. Deaf Anthology Deaf
urges Deaf Americans to step in to support this Deaf school in Kenya, trying to
survive on its own. As with most of Africa, the Deaf schools are controlled and
operated by missionaries from aboard. Kisii School of the Deaf needs our
attention and support as it is the only Deaf school owned and operated by the
Deaf themselves. All of its teachers and staff are Deaf themselves, except one
who is considering leaving after not being paid for months. Deaf Anthology
praises the Deaf for being committed to the education of the Deaf children, so
they can be a productive citizen of our society, living the Kenyan dream of
having a decent job with living wages and benefits, and even a college
scholarship.
Deaf Anthology also hopes that someone will come forward and start a
GoFundMe account to raise funds to support the Kisii School of the Deaf, giving
them hope of a better life.
This is Smokey stay tuned for the next episode of Deaf Anthology, Good Night Deaf America!
