I think Deaf children should be given the same assignment writing an essay, "I wish my teacher knew...," a project similar to that of an elementary teacher in Denver.
These are just a few samples from her classroom:
"I wish my teacher knew I don't have friends to play with me."
"I wish my teacher knew sometimes my reading log is not signed because my mom not around a lot."
"I wish my teacher knew that I don't have pencils at home to do my homework."
Perhaps parents of Deaf children can do the same at home, I think these will be common:
"I wish my parents knew how to communicate with me using ASL."
"I wish my parents knew of my depression of living with a cochlear-implanted device which is giving me a migraine headaches and that I rather be playing outside with my friends during recess, not in speech therapy."
"I wish my parents knew that I'll be happier with my peers at a state Deaf institution where I can play sports and not stay indoors after school watching television.
