Deaf Anthology # 610: "Sidewalk"

Again, a volunteer, actually an observer at the annual Sidewalk Film Festival, in its 12th season which is gaining in popularity among the top 10 in the nation, up there with Sundance. It’s a learning experience, watching them put it all together, an event of over 2oo films screening at 8 venues with a lot of logistics involved. I simply assist in unloading ice cubes and beverages into the International Center, where all of the panel discussions are held. My interpreter didn’t show up for the first one on “Diversity,” so they cancelled it as these Independent filmmakers aren’t going to waste their times while here in the spotlight, so I lost an opportunity to interact with them. However I was able to participate in the discussion on the Internet effects on print media with a panel of film critics, including one from USA Today. Even though I’m not humble, I inquire about joining a film critic society and how to preview a film from the Hollywood studios before their national release. Nowadays anyone can be a film critic on Youtube or with their own blog. The only film I get around to watch is a Chinese documentary with English subtitles about Beijing taxi drivers in a changing society leading up to the Olympics. I asked the director about her next project as I was curious, she will explore female sexuality issues. China is heading toward capitalism, not necessarily democracy, but on their own terms. I decided not to watch “Ballhawks,” as the description of its documentary, narrated by Bill Murray, is self-explanatory in the guide. I ain’t going to sit through an hour of Cubs fans waiting outside Wrigley Fields to catch home-run balls batted over the outfield fence. Here is this one guy, with nothing better to do, collecting over 4,400 such balls. I think he should be featured on the A&E popular “Hoarding” program.
