I just got a newsletter yesterday from the Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Milwaukee), wait a minute, they changed the name of the organization to Center for Communication, Hearing & Deafness. I wasn't aware of that until now, after leaving the state upon my retirement. Here's an announcement on Youtube with closed-captions available, so I leave it up to you to judge it for yourselves. They claim that it reflects the changes that are happening within our society as a whole.I thought Wisconsin is a progressive state, perhaps it's returning to the Stone Age. Is this a new trend in America, aren't we going to see the word Deaf being removed from our schools, agencies, and organizations. Is Deaf no longer political correct in our society. They use the Better Hearing & Speech month, rather than Deaf Awareness week to make a formal announcement, that raise a red flag, can they claim to be partial, having an interpreter service program that is losing its edge to a competitor, PIE (Professional Interpreting Enterprise), ASL classes whereas most are readily available at local college, including UWM and MATC that has Interpreter Training Programs (ITP), and their CommunicationLink still selling obsolete TTYs that are fading away into extinction. Of course, they must provide a broad array of services to convince the United Way and their corporate sponsors that they are serving the community without appearing to be biased somewhat. Although I have some misgivings, I do appreciate their efforts on some worthwhile projects such as the entertaining "Children of the Sun," drum troupe and Family Learning Vacation which are duplicated elsewhere. I don't know if there are any Deaf on its board representing the Deaf consumer organization such as WAD. I think the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Alliance (DHHA) and Wisconsin KODA, etc are filling in the gap providing programs to meet the real needs of the underserved Deaf community, these alternative agencies are underfunded, and needs the support of local foundations and philanthropist that needs to be aware of their mission through media exposure. What are your thoughts, what were the reaction of the Deaf community in Wisconsin, my input that there ought to be no donation without representation, a slogan devised from those who opposed taxes when our nation was undergoing a revolution that our Deaf may need to incite one to free ourselves from perceived oppression we are facing. It is not so often that I make a commentary on Deaf Anthology but this needs to be addressed. I thought we Deaf came a long way to gain the respect only to be mislabeled again, and pushed out of the picture. When will the world accept our existence?
