Deaf Anthology # 550: "Homewood"

Yesterday was National Night Out, I was armed to the teeth taking a walk in Homewood Park where the local police and Target was hosting the event, no they weren't target practicing, mind you, I meant the department store, Target, they were giving out Beach balls, I assume they couldn't sell them because of the oil spill at Orange Beach so they are overstocked on them, and a set of color chalk, and the children are creative in the cooperative play of drawing on the sidewalk which look like cutouts of people holding hands as a sign of unity against crime. Music in the air block out the flashing sirens in the neighborhood, the radio station running the show, won free complimentary passes to the Alabama Adventure, a sort of a 6 Flags/Hurricane Harbor theme park, which I am giving to a Deaf family with seven kids so they can enjoy a day on the roller coasters and in the wave pool. Aren't they accident prone. One booth was giving out lunch voucher at a local diner, the insurance agent initial it to include the drinks, it's on the house. Interesting sitting on a bench watching people, especially two young teenagers in blue jumpsuits, with the Homewood Jail imprints, making a round of collecting trash with the sheriff following on a ATV, that's what I least expected at such an event. I don't think it's public humiliation. Shaking hands with candidates running for sheriff in order to get my hands on those free ice cream cones. McGruff the mascot is no where to be found, but left his legacy allowing kids to jump with joy in an inflatable pad. The SWAT is there with weapons at its disposal, the FBI, and of course the DARE volunteers selling pizzas to make up the budget shortfalls. The mist provided a cool relief in this heat wave, as I can see, many are staying away taking a dip in the municipal outdoor pool.
News van on the scene reported no incidents, I am not in a mood to incite one. The event was a success so give them hands of applause.
