Misha Zena recently posted about segregation between oral and ASL Deaf in the public schools, so lets assume that these may be the scenario we are facing: 1. An ASL Deaf woman was not hired to be a cafeteria cook because the school have an oral Deaf child.2. An ASL Deaf janitor, despite his seniority, was laid off, under the pretext of budget cuts, because of an oral Deaf child at the school where he works.
3. An oral Deaf boy peed in his pants because an ASL Deaf boy is in the bathroom.
4. The oral Deaf pitcher, despite his undefeated season, suffered his first loss when his school team had to forfeit a game because the visitor team have a few ASL Deaf on its rooster.
5. An oral Deaf child have to stay indoors during recess because the ASL Deaf are on the playgrounds.
6. The oral and ASL Deaf live a couple blocks from each others, but the school board have to foot the bill of having two separate
buses taking them back and forth from school.7. Parents of an oral Deaf child refused to come to PTA functions as Deaf ASL teachers are on its staff.
8. An ASL Deaf child have to eat on his own, meals delivered to him in the classroom, while the oral Deaf child in the noisy cafeteria.
9. The parents complained that a Deaf ASL gang grabbed their oral Deaf child in the hallway and push him into the locker. The Principal called both parents to come to a meeting, but the parents refused to see each other, therefore, they can't be disciplined.
10. The oral Deaf child is the smelliest in class because he refused showering with the ASL Deaf after gym which was divided in half so they have no contacts with each others. They closed the swimming pool.
11. There was never a school assembly because both oral and ASL Deaf children can't be together, even no movies as long as there no agreements between parents whether the closed-captioning can be displayed or not.
12. No field trips because of objections from parents. Hearing children have to suffered because of the ridiculous arrangement they have to put up with. The school board obviously can't afford to duplicate expenses. No extra-curricular activities after school, not even a Jr NAD chapter. There you have it, what a mess we are getting ourselves into. Deaf Anthology opposed segregation now and forever, the school setting is an ideal place to learn from each other. If there is a split at school, then there is a split in our community.
Is the city going to cancel the annual fourth of July fireworks because of the possibility of both ASL and oral Deaf children may be at the park. If they segregated the public schools, they might as well segregated its public services having separate water fountains for ASL and oral Deaf, just like they once were in racially divided Deep South. The Deaf can't ever be separated but equal. ACLU, where are you?Revised 4/21/09

This is Smokey, stay tuned for the next episode of Deaf Anthology. Good night, whatever!
